Re: Magic - Kor - 03-01-2015

I cringed a little, until I remember they reprinted it once after Unlimited.

Re: Magic - matter11 - 03-02-2015

I'm casual who plays commander. Super-timmy way to phrase it but it just reminds me of "how it used to be" and how magic "should" be played. The unpredictability, variety of cards, excitement of playing the big dude... sigh. Can't wait to play again. There also just seems to be more emphasis on in-game strategy as you're not just trying to run the same combo every game like standard. Those 100 card decks are prone to falling over though.

I run a mono-black discard control deck with ob nixilis or balthor and a white/blue aura deck with Bruna

People at my LGS play 5 color and those decks are thrice the size of  commander decks.  I don't understand the appeal.  so many cards with so little life.

Re: Magic - Xineoph - 03-03-2015

I had a deck of random, "fun" cards.  The deck had no real plan or purpose, it just tried not to die too quickly.  I usually played it in multiplayer games because there people would ignore me and I might actually get three lands into play.

Sometimes I wish I still played magic.  But money.

Nope. Unlimited was the last time Black Lotus was printed.

And that spill looks like it sucks.  I'd hate it if it happened to me and this is after I got rid of 24000 commons from playing limited all the time.

Re: Magic - The Generic Name - 03-20-2015

Prerelease tonight and this weekend for DTK.  Deck fodder hooray!

Re: Magic - Neptune - 03-21-2015

Tried doing the midnight.  Too tired.  Will try again on Sunday.

This one casual showed up.  He bought some packs, opened two Ugins.  He opens his pool for the midnight and he's like "Oh, I got another one!  Oh wait, it's foil?  No, it wasn't..."  then he looks in his other hand at the OTHER Ugin.  Four Ugins in one night.  Goddamn.

Re: Magic - zaneyard - 03-21-2015

One FRF pack in pre-release pool. Think you got trolled.

No, this guy isn't that savvy.  People watched him open it.

Those are almost $30 apiece right? My cousin runs one against me in commander and I hate it so much... I don't have enough remove target permanent cards.

Re: Magic - Neptune - 03-21-2015

Almost $35 and the foil is $100.  Depending on colors, I recommend Oblivion Ring, Dreadbore, Utter End, Nevermore, Capsize, Bramblecrush, and stuff like that.  Can I see your decklist?

And if you think he's nasty in EDH, you should see him in Legacy.  I was testing last night, Dredge VS MUD.  I almost turn two'd him, but he gets one more artifact in hand, Metalworker and Staff of Domination go nuts, casts Ugin, etc., so he turn two'd me, instead.  It was beautiful.

Re: Magic - Kor - 03-22-2015

After leaving Magic behind (Alpha thru Ice Age), I'm being sucked into this again by a couple co-workers-turned-friends. I'm troubled that the game changed from card discovery/experimentation into deck lists/card values; mechanics aside, is this the same MTG that decimated my young wallet?  :-[

It's the same.  It was always about decklists and card values, if you want to go to tournaments.  If you're playing kitchen table Magic, then it can be whatever you want.  Either way, it'll still decimate your slightly more mature wallet.

Play Netrunner instead. I've dropped ~$200 and now own a full deck's worth of copies of most of the card pool. It's also a really good game.

Eschatos is now the person that goes door to door to inform people about his lord and savior netrunner.'

Kor, brews work just fine. My buddy plays at FNM with a blue red counter burn deck that he made and regularly places. There's always going to be the hardcore spikes at FNM but I have a 50 dollar budget brew I made for jeskai and I do just fine with it. I used to think that the deck sucked but then i started getting better at actually playing the game and it started performing better.
The beauty of the meta is you can still make rogue builds if you want to.

If you really want to have that discovery and building part of the game, go to draft events. The limited environment right now is really fun.

That said, they're really steering the sets towards what you're remembering, Kor.  I can't support limited enough if you want to experience rare interactions and hilarious blowouts by random cards.

And apparently, I don't suck at it.  4th place in the prerelease, today.  Nothing good in the prize packs, but placing always feels good.

You're assuming: [1] That I'd give up on playing with friends. [2] I'm willing to play a different game from my friends. [3] In a competitive game. move from a position of experience to one of inexperience.

Sorry man, not much of a pitch when you don't know a person's motivations for playing in the first place.

Re: Magic - Neptune - 03-28-2015

Won the release tournament last night.  Someone opened up Ugin and Foil Monastery Mentor in one pack.  I never get those kind of packs.  I was R/w with a bunch of cheap dude and three spells that pumped my whole team.  Super Aggro FTW.  I lost one game the whole night and won 6 packs (only 22 people because college is currently on vacation, oh well).

Still not very impressed with this set.  It seems really good for limited, has a few EDH gems, but nothing for actual Magic.  I'll see what develops in the coming weeks.

You mean constructed? There's definitely 5-10 standard playable cards in this set, in addition to some new modern cards.
