Just finished [Image: 51LCbSBzLIL._SL500_AA300_.jpg] over the weekend. It's the sequel to The Magicians, and I'd recommend the two highly. Many people describe it as "Harry Potter for grown-ups," and that's probably a pretty good analogy.

Got A Confederacy of Dunces, Don Quixote, and a book about Hayao Miyazaki at Borders. Hopefully they are all good.

A confederacy of dunces has been on my back burner for a good five years now, and i never get around to it.  I only hear great things.

It is the best piece of satire I have ever read.  The author killed himself because no one would publish the book, and 11 years later his mother finally got someone to actually read it.  And then it got a Pulitzer Prize.  Shit is entertaining.

better satire than catch-22? i think catch-22 and lolita might be my two favorite books

In my opinion, yes.

Decided against, because as much as I like his short stories I think my brain would fall out on the floor if I read a full-length novel by him.

If it's the one that I have, which includes those 2 + "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (made into Blade Runner) and "The Man and the High Castle" (pretty cool alternate history novel), I'd still recommend it.  Adroids/High Castle are much less of "bwhaaa??" type books than Ubik/Eldritch.

I wish P. K. Dick books were less depressing.

Started a new release today

[Image: images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTYD3vsLIp8UF4q6Eu8oBr...cqmPA2RvOQ]

page 84, and I think I feel confident in calling this to be a must-read for this community. Let's just say the plot revolves around the internet, all video games ever, 80s movies and music, and D&D.

I am sad they didn't go with the advance reader cover, which was waaaaay cooler

Finished this. Twas pretty swell. The middle half - > later the story got a bit on rails and went by too fast for continued development of cool 80s nostalgia plot devices. Yet, all in all, a tremendously awesome geek read.

I don't want to spoil it, but, contents include: Temple of Syrinx, Adventure, ZORK!, WarGames, easter eggs, hacking, Metaverses, Wil Wheaton, WoW, Pac-Man, JOUST!, Liches, spells, magic, anti-magic, vorpal swords, level 99 mages, the holy trilogies, a new grail diary, Godzilla, Gundam, l33t spellings, Willy Wonka, and much much more.

Finally finished ubik. Really good read. Not sure if I want to tackle the dark tower books, or try p.k. dick's "flow my tears". Any suggestions from you guys?

you mean Stephen King's Dark Tower books?

I read the first 4 nearly as they came out (well, I read 1 before 2 came out) and I gave up at Wizard and Glass. Blaine the train was just stupid.

A shame, because I still think #1 is a damn fine book / world, and #2 was a decent extension of that. But after that...blech

I should say that I was a huge SK fan during that time, and was comparing those books to IT and the uncut re-release of The Stand.

Do you know if the comics do the story any justice? TBH I'm trying to keep my time sinks to a minimum, but I've been interested in the dark tower series for a while.

I liked Blaine the train, but the story got stupid as hell when Stephen King started inserting himself into the story.

A Dance with Dragons needs to hurry up and come out in paperback, hardbacks area little cumbersome in a war zone.
