My boss was very understanding when I had a conversation with him about my dad (and therefore probably needing time off in the near future to spend time with him and deal with family stuff). I told him I should be able to take care of most everything without impacting work at all by doing the 4x10 thing and just taking 4-day weekends in between alternating 4-day workweeks. He reminded me that I do my work with my computer, and can do it from anywhere, and if I need to 'work from home' to spend time with my family in Chicago, that that wouldn't be a problem.

My old boss probably would've asked me why I was talking to him if I didn't need bereavement leave.

There are days that I love the fact that I work for a people-centric company. One of them is today.
