Bears repeating: Try Italian wines. Most of the stuff I found bad about wine was the "woody notes" from the barrels. Italians use steel barrels.

pinot noir's pretty good. It's not really dry, but not super sweet either, just a healthy medium. I liked those when I first started drinking.
