Reading a couple of Dr Who books by one of my favorite Warhammer 40,000 writers, Dan Abnett.

Seems like he's boss no matter what universe he's writing about.

bumping this to bring the book discussion out of the "made my day" thread.

Currently reading Cryptonomicon.
Freaking amazing book.

I've read two Halo books: The Fall of Reach and The Floor.  I didn't really like the second one, but the first one was written by a different (and better) author, I just never got around to reading the next book of the trilogy, written by the same as the first book (Fall of Reach).

Also, I've read a ton of Orson Scott Card.

For school I'm reading The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.  A "true" fiction story about Vietnam.  Really good book, but the BS we have to do for english class ruins it.

I'm just finishing up the Malazan book of the Fallen series. I've not read fantasy for a long time, and I was offish about diving back into it, but Erikson is a genius when it comes to relating characters, he creates a massive world where you get into the smallest characters mind, not just the hero.

It was alright. Not really funny in my opinion. Didn't seem good enough to try and reboot the whole series.

I acquired the set, and feel obligated to support this astounding work with actual cash.

I thought the movie absolutely astounding(ballpark 10 million gold stars), but the GC's tossed exponential values on that number. I can see the now the movie touched on as much as it could, and would recommend everyone read this, if only to witness an amazing fusion of art and writing.

knowing nothing of the ^ movie or GC, I rented it on the ipad on the trip to chicago. I was floored by it.*

*Then again, at the time, it was only the second movie I saw this year, so when you don't see many movies it's easy to be amused by a monkey watching a cat. Cause it's not like playing electric guitar, reading comics, playing video games, and having dating awkwardness is a sufficient life foundation to form my own opinion.

Without the comics you really have to read in to the movie to get the same depth. Anyone who has trouble transitioning to adulthood should read them, since it's pretty much targeted like a laser towards us those people.

I've just finished this, and am giving this as a gift to three close people in my life for Christmas. If I had to paraphrase the whole book using it's own words, it would be this gem: If you don't have a coherent philosophy of life, there is a danger you might mislive.

If you want a free sample, here's some astro-turfing-blogging by the author.

I'll check it out, Rummy, once I read the last three books I've bought on recommendations from this thread Tongue

I just finished rereading A Wrinkle in Time and am reading A Swiftly Tilting Planet. It's not as good IMO, although it is interesting.

Finished what I assumed to be the Bigend Trilogy by William Gibson. The third book was almost as good as the first, well actually better in some aspects.

Just started Zero History yesteday.  Definatly digging it.

Also finished reading the Illuminatus! trilogy.  Holy shit was this funny and awesome, I recommend you check it out.  I mean, I don't think I've laughed so many times at a book in a long time.  There's a lot of interesting history and philosphy points touched on as well.  It reminds me a lot of the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy actually.

x2.

I gotta start setting some reading time aside, it took me four flights to finish Pattern Recognition, now I have to read Hacker Crackdown before I can get to Spook Country.
