When interplay sold the rights of the fallout IP to bethesda they KEPT the rights to develop and release a fallout MMO. Its been in discussion for quite some time. I think Interplay is gambling that Fallout 3 will reinvigorate the series with enough popularity that they would be able to successfully launch an MMO.
Not a bad gamble, Id probably at least take some interest in a Fallout MMO, especially since Bethesda WOULDN'T be making it. However, I think the part of it becoming more popular won't happen. It may get some credit with console-kiddies, but MMOs are exclusive to the PC market, which I don't think is really going ga-ga over Fallout 3. Â Sig by Joel |

CAD? S'cuse me while I vomit.
I don't really know much enough about Fallout to know if it would make a good MMO, but I've started playing through 1 and 2 due to the constant praise they receive, and I'm really enjoying it so far. |

Actually I think Interplay ended up selling all of Fallout and then paying Beth to let them make a Fallout MMO. The deal is that if they don't release it in like 7 years or something, then Beth gets the rights back and will be able to make a Fallout MMO if they want. Also, Interplay have hired Chris Taylor and Jason Anderson from the original Fallout games to work on the MMO, so its possible they might not fuck it up (unless everyone plays a vault dweller saving the world) |

I think the best thing to do would be to have no towns at the beginning of the game and let players 'construct' their own villages/cities so to speak from the wastes.  Sig by Joel |

For the brief period I tried Star Wars Galaxies, I cursed player cities. It would make putting down a tent / shelter / whatever just freakin' impossible. You see, the shelter would attempt to "temporary terraform" a level piece of land out of the world's geometry, even if you were on a hill, so your little tent would come up and you'd have your little chair and shit. But if you were in spitting distance of buildings in the wilds, forget it. |

I personally thought SWG's player cities were the best thing about the game. I loved putting stuff into my houses and had a weapon and armor emporium along with any rare stuff I got from the veteran program or looted that I couldn't use. It's a cool idea I think that certainly could be tweaked to be better.
I would love a Fallout MMO simply for it being a post-apocalyptic setting on Earth which there hasn't been. I want more MMO stuff like that cause I'm tired of seeing Fantasy stuff. I've never even played Fallout, though I have Fallout 3 on pre-order, but the setting alone is worth trying it out. Till then, I'll have to hope this Zombie MMO in the works turns out to be good if it comes out next year |

[/quote] I was actually thinking about this, the way you'd do it is if your character died at the hands of a zombie he'd become a zombie permanently and you'd need to create a new character if you didn't want to be a zombie. But to make the death penalty not so harsh you could have an inheritance system, where you can pass down items and maybe some other stuff from character to character. So you'd have a combination of AI and player controlled zombies. Then you could have some modest RPG elements but it would mostly be about the humans trying to build fortifications and collect weapons and food. It'd basically be like WWZ. Have some sort of build system, you build up towns. You have to go outside of towns to forage. Maybe you can produce some of the stuff you need in the fort-towns but you would need to go out for the rest. There would be abandoned cities you can explore and maybe set up base in. Guilds would be like groups of survivors working together. You could kill other players but you'd earn titles based on your actions. Sort of like a reputation system. Maybe you wouldn't get penalized in reputation for killing those with the cutthroat title and looking at anyone you can see how dirty they play to survive. Zombies role would be basically to dismantle fortifications and over-run humans. There would have to be a constant balancing between the populations of AI vs human to make sure the survivors aren't too overwhelmed. Maybe there can even be a Zombie Panic like infection tactic. If you are truly an asshole you'd infect yourself and go into towns or try to get into fortifications. Maybe you could get AI guards or something have some sort of speech attribute you can bump up to easily talk your way into places. |

My post doesn't really make sense now that I know that Dave was talking about a zombie game MMO that is being made and not ordering us to tell him how we'd make one.
