The vibrato in guitars is a whole bunch of mechanical tricks, pushing the strings sideways along the fret, or pushing the string down hard against the fingerboard, or even a vibrato tilting bridge with expression arm (aka whammy bar).
Adding vibrato in fretless instruments like violin and cello is easy by comparison -- just roll your fingertip up and down while continuing to play the note. No angular push, no contraption needed. At the same time, there was no way to not think about the note and just count the frets or the marks. It made me have to learn how to recognize pitch and when I'm sharp or flat and roll my whole hand back to compensate. What I learned in high school doesn't all translate to good electric guitar playing. I'm realizing that my fretting hand is working too hard and I'm squeezing the fretted notes sharp. At the same time, my grip is not able to barre across all 6 strings and have each note ring out cleanly. I've only been trying for a couple years, and while Rocksmith is happy with just the lower three strings of the major barre, my ears can still tell the difference between "full chord" and "faking it". |

barring chords is difficult for me as well. I'm stuck on trying to get all the open chords memorized/mastered.

dude those sound great nos, i couldn't imagine being able to compose stuff like that. those are some good vibes. i'm terrible at electronic music concepts, even so with traditional guitar composition.
here's a couple of loops/sounds i've done recently. mix and balance varies on each track cause i'm a downy [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/aaro-n-eumann/2parts-81614[/soundcloud] [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/aaro-n-eumann/extress-tuesdays-redux[/soundcloud] [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/aaro-n-eumann/9714-with-lead[/soundcloud] god writing music with other people is so much easier. electric guitar is loads of fun but i'd rather have multiple perspectives combined on a piece and be able to focus all of my creative flow on bass where it belongs. (10-17-2014, 10:39 AM)Dr. Zaius link Wrote: god writing music with other people is so much easier. I can't agree more, in fact, most of my best stuff has other people's work in it... I have a few friends who've played guitar for the better part of their lives, so hanging out with them is pretty great sometimes when we bust open the DAW and whip out my midi keyboard (cause they can actually play it and make melodies with it, I just use m+k 99% of the time). Remixes are fun for that too, because you get to take a song and adapt your own feeling to it. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...816A386B70 There's all my older shit, from my first year producing, for reference on how much I used to suck. Your stuff is pretty good actually, musically it's nice to listen to. Now you gotta work on the technical aspect. It's all about balancing the volumes, basically assign everything to it's own mixer channel and go to town. You have two options (I do the it "improper" way)... the proper way is to leave headroom on all tracks (about 6db) and then to master everything at the end or on in a new project file... but I prefer to master while I mix... so throw a Parametric EQ 2 on the master track, go to presets > mastering > 20hz + 18khz cut (this cuts all the frequencies we can't hear but still might be rendered, just good practice imo) and also a limiter and crank the gain to 6db, or maximus/soundgoodizer (maximus has a handful of useful presets under mastering, play around with the knobs... soundgoodizer is like maximus for dummies, 4 presets, 1 knob... never go over 25% or things start to sound like crap, contrary to the name. Maximus can load the soundgoodizer presets, if you're feeling adventurous... lol). Then use limiters or multi-band compressors (hell, just use Maximus) on individual channels depending on if they need to stand out more (snares are usually the culprit). Typically for EDM/bass music, the kick should cut through the mix the loudest, so get that as close to 0db (just before the volume starts going in the red) as possible, and mix everything around that. Also in FL studio, it's worth noting that each plug-in and sample you load into a sequence channel has a volume there too, typically max that for everything and control the volume through the mixer directly... You can also duck things like bass behind the kick drum (aka sidechaining) so that it's not muddy... I can make a video to show you how I figured out how to do it, because my method can be used for any instrument... so if you wanted to duck one synth behind another or some weird shit, you can. Also reverb 2, delay 2, stereo enhancer and panOmatic are worth familiarizing yourself with. They're pretty simple, but hella useful.

got a scarlett 6i6, it's out of my league but I wanted the external power and the Focusrite Mix control.
It comes with Ableton 9 Live Lite. I am staring at it like the largest blank canvas. I have no idea what to do with it. 2001: The Monolith appears ... the dawn of man. The tutorials are helping but I still need to know the principles behind what I'm doing. |
