After playing System Shock 2 for roughly three hours, I can say that...well, I'm not impressed.

It's really hard, the rpg system is annoying, hacking is convient but useless at some times, and those freaking camera's are the death of me.

Honestly, I don't like it that much. Maybe I have to get farther into it, but I'll pass. Not finding it that enjoyable. In fact, I don't think I had any fun while I was playing. :\

I might play Bioshock or CoD4 because that's more what I'm into. Mindless shooting frenzy #48 or so. I just enjoy not having to work to enjoy a game. I just want to play, not be worked into enjoying it.

I wish that everyone would just stop lurking in the past and actually admit that some later games are executed better than the older ones.
A perfect example of this is Goldeneye.

Yes, Goldeneye set a standard, but we've expanded on that. Yeah, Half-Life is a classic, but we've got a new better, funner version now.

And last but not least, (caff is gonna strangle me for saying this) since I've played roughly the same amount of each game, I had a lot less fun playing System Shock 2 than I did playing Bioshock.

After all, isn't having fun the purpose of a game?

You're totally right, Karth. Really, this is a life-changing moment for me. All the time I've wasted watching "classic" (read: shit) movies and listening to "timeless" (read: outdated) musical works. Not to mention playing all those boring, ugly masterpieces of gaming.

One could argue that it's completely different for video games.

I'm also starting System Shock 2, and a whole lot of things could have done better.  I'm still having fun though and plan to play until I beat it.

It depends, while some NES games like Metroid are timeless and will always be amazing, other like Battletoads really are outdated not worth playing, except for nostalgia's sake.  It really just depends.

Its alright if Karth doesn't understand it, System Shock is murderously difficult, but thats part of what made it a GREAT game. Bioshock is teddy bear cuddly easy, so piss easy playing it through on hard isn't even a challenge. To make bioshock even partly "challenging" you have to make up handicaps for yourself, like 'wrench only'.

Thats alright, just like Budr said, we should forget about "timeless movies" like Citizen Kane, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, 12 Angry Men, or King Kong, because they are no longer relevant with today's digital CGI and amazing special effects.

We should only stick to games made in the past four years, because everything before that is outdated.

As for Goldeneye, if you think that is the epitome of FPS gaming, you are a sad sad gamer  :'(

Common caff. Look at it. It's almost a decade old now.

Do we think that it's still fun? Probably, but there are better choices!

Shut up I just remembered my boyfriend lost the disc.  But it's still installed on his computer.  So I'll go do that... maybe.

I BEAT SYSTEM SHOCK 2 DAMMIT ;_;.  Which is the best game evar, because I remember having no good ammo to fight the robuts in the storage rooms, so I lured one under an elevator and crushed it =X.  Also you need to install the hi-poly model pack for it, coz' it's awesome.  And I used an ICE Pick on the gameplayer just to unlock all the games on it D=.

Karth, the reason why you don't enjoy these games is because they were before your time. Also, you sound like you're not very interested in the RPG aspects so you should probably stick to the simplified system used in Bioshock.

Now if someone made a mod that updated the graphics, user interface, and playability of System Shock 2 to Bioshock levels, I would be in heaven.

I like RPG's, and I love shooters, but the area where they cross isn't very big.

Maybe I'm just too pampered with games like Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Portal, Garry's Mod, etc.

There's a mod that updates most of the enemy models into nice looking hi-poly hi-res models, and a hi-res texture pack.  Not Bioshock levels, but it's a nice improvement.

Don't forget that through half the game you're expecting M. Knight Shamalan to pop out and say "what a twist!"

Goldeneye was not the epitome of FPS gaming, it's just the last GREAT console FPS, the last GOOD console FPS was perfect dark (for N64, which is pretty much goldeneye with new guns and slightly different story).

There hasn't been what I consider a good console FPS ever since those 2 games...and... obviously...Gordon Freeman pwns j00

Why hasn't there been a good one? Because they're all now, as Caffeine puts it, "cuddly games" it's hard to fail the single player, and the multiplayer is lackluster at best. I remember Goldeneye being so fucking hard at times, but I loved playing it! I especially loved blowing up the server room at the satellite control...that was an awesome part of the game...that was insanely difficult if you tried to beat it on almost any of the difficulty settings...seriously, the game was HARD and if you DIED (that's right you could DIE, and you didn't have regenerative health!) you'd have to start over from the beginning, or last check point, which is another thing that made me LOVE the game, now all they do is hold your hand and walk you through everything...you might as well just go see a movie in theaters...it ends up costing about as much as a game nowadays.

There's still so much more that can actually be done with FPS gaming that has been yet to be done (well). A good FPS MMO hasn't come out yet, obviously you can't do much with an MMO that hasn't already been done, and you can't do much with an FPS that hasn't already been done, and huxley doesn't look special to me, then Twilight War, well they pissed me off so I stopped following them. Ultimately, here's what I suggest you do:
Play Half-Life, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode One, Half-Life 2 Episode 2, and Portal and then decide if you really need another single player FPS.

Honestly I don't find Bioshock THAT "rpg-ish" personally, and I enjoyed the game...but like I said, I expected M. Knight Shamalan to pop out once in a while going "what a twist!" in fact that almost became frustrating with it's story.

What we need are more good non-zombie post-apoc games. Whether it be RPG, FPS, or whatever, we don't have enough of those!

If you don't like them, why would you make a thread asking if you should buy Bioshock? Or do you consider an FPSRPG to be more like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.  ?
