That's it. 5 years since stopping, I want to pick up the piano again. It's too much to listen to a piece and just be content with pretending to be able to play it. I need to buy a new keyboard, and I have to learn everything over again--theory, technique, and I really really really have to train my ears this time around.

Since my apartment is tiny, I need recommendations for a compact keyboard. Which of these seem like a good idea?

I really like the Yamaha P series, but it's a bill more than it looks like you want to spend.

I have a KORG, I like it. I don't play much piano though so I can't really help you aside from that semi-useless comment.

I'm starting this summer.

Any of the Yamaha keyboards with weighted keys are great. I want to say I used the P series in college, but I can't remember. Just remember to start with basic chord progressions and scales and make sure you are fingering correctly. And if you need any help with theory or ear training just give me a holler.

Well that's +2 for Yamaha. Once my exams are over I'll make a trip to a store and get a feel for what feels best. If people have recommendations for music theory books, let me know. What I regret most about my playing was that I always pooh-poohed actually learning this foundational material, and focused only on playing/performance.

This was my college textbook and the book I use to teach my students. It's a little dry, but it gets the job done.

Stopped by a music store (finished an exam and I needed a break), tried out the Casio PX150 as well as the Yamaha P35 and P105. I was not a fan of the texture of the casio's keys, and both the casio and p35 had inferior (though subtly inferior) sound to the p105, even after playing around with them a bit. It's a shame, too; the Casio was $80 off the amazon/kraftmusic price.

Just need to try out the Korg and make a decision now.

Called three different places in MKE, can't seem to find the SP170 on display. I know I'll be happy with the P105 so I went ahead and ordered it. I'll order some of those theorybooks and a couple songbooks as well and hopefully I'll be in business again once my summer vacation begins.

I'm working on rescuing a beat-up Les Paul Studio from 2003.
The fretboard was coming off; the finish was knocked to hell; only 1 pickup worked; and worst of all, it had some bullshit PepsiCo artwork ripping off Van Halen's iconic design. But the price was right and I'm fixing it up here in the studio.

Looks pretty slick; very detailed cataloguing.

My P105 arrived a couple of weeks ago, been having fun with it. Trying to learn CPE Bach's Solfeggietto now, hopefully will have it and a few others mastered by the end of the summer.

It has stereo out, so running one line clean through my bass amp and the other line through delay pedal and 60s tube amp with trem.

Using the onboard delay, the delay-on-delay creates a synth/drumbox percussive effect, then can switch off for squeelies.

Learn video game jingles.  I always find those the most fun to play on any instrument and it helps motivate.  Also they range from ezpz to expert mode.
