Spook Country kinda coasts into Zero History. Nothing amazing but still some cool stuff.

So, since I can listen to mp3s while working... anybody have any good audiobooks they can recommend? As well as sites to obtain them on?

Audible.com

I did Neuromancer in the past year. My first and only Gibson book so far. It was great, and I will read more, but I don't feel like doing a bunch of them in a row, even if they are supposed to be a set.

Just finished this, on advice of a lady friend, since I had heretofore not read Dahl, which she sees as some form of defect in my life. Pretty good.

How had you not read BFG as a kid?  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Anyways, Neuromancer is pretty good so far.  Taking 4 days off of it to read Metamorphosis (by Kafke) for AP English.
I posted this somewhere else, but I wonder if the term "ICE" (and ICE breaker) were invented by Gibson or if he borrowed it from somewhere, since Deus Ex calls brute forcing ICE breaking Smile.

Any literary issues you may have noticed in his first book quickly disappear in subsequent publications, Gibson refines himself quickly.

His books actually do get better the more he writes.

Neuromancer was written in 1984, he basically invented all the terminology along with it.

Look for Molly Millions in "Johnny Mnemonic". :p

If you want to understand Dahl, read Boy. Although the short story about the crashed WWII fighter in Henry Sugar is true; it was Dahl himself who got shot down and had his mask melted to his face.

Dahl was one of my favorite authors as a child, and remains to this day although I haven't reread any of his books lately. He had a talent for being scary, but _just enough_. I heard a biography of him on NPR a few months ago, it was quite an eye-opener even though I knew a lot of the content involved.

My childhood book was a giant anthology of Dahl's shit, and it was fucking awesome.

The Dark Tower series has a damn good audiobook format. It's an old guy with a super raspy smoker voice...freakin' awesome to hear.

Ahh cool, thanks for the recommendation. I'll probably try that one out for now, since I've heard good things about the series anyways and it sounded interesting to me.

Almost done with Neuromancer...
I love the sound of the Rasta accents the best :p. Also the trippy descriptions of cyber space.

And that's the worst Gibson novel too. Each trilogy they get better and take place earlier in the time line. I predict the next series will take place in the past.
That'll be messed up, if it takes place around the time he was writing Neuromancer, and actually mentions it. That'd be a plot loop of Kingian proportions.

He co-wrote an alternative past novel.
Difference Engine, yeah, I didn't really like that all that much. Too much steampunk for my taste. A new series set in the 80's is what I mean Tongue
