I guess my favorite books would have to be Lolita, Catch-22, All the Names, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Time Quake, and The Trial.

Right now I'm trying to finish Pattern Recognition before school starts.  It's okay, but not really as cyberpunk as i was looking for.

I assume you've read Neuromancer?  If you haven't, I highly recommend- it pretty much defined cyberpunk. I read it earlier this summer and loved it, though it's not the easiest read...

Right now I'm reading Tess of the D'Urbervilles because I have to.  I'm not really diggin' it so far, not my cup of tea.

Favorite book I've read recently has to be Ubik by Philip K. Dick- go read it.  It's awesome.

I'm currently in the middle of William Gibson's 'All Tomorrow's Parties'. The Bridge Trilogy is about 1000 times better then the Sprawl Trilogy.
I have Pattern Recognition and Spook Country on the shelf all lined up.

I also have Hacker Crackdown awaiting to be read, it should be very good as well.

I've been re-reading books from the Warhammer 40,000 Universe. Dan Abnett is amazazing.

Right now I'm reading the Greatwinter Trilogy by Sean McMullen.



It's amazing, kinda a mix of steampunk and alternate history.  I highly recommend any book he's written.

well i just finished reading all 11 books of the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, sadly he couldn't finish the last book before he passed away due to illness. Right now I'm going through the Sword of Truth series by Terry goodkind.

Some of my favourite books though include the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and The Mote in Gods Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.

Holy shit I uhh had to take notes.  OK here goes all my responses, I'm not going to bother quoting everyone.

Tragic:  There's another Russian author that just died recently you'd probably like.  He wrote Day in the Life of Ivan Dnysivich (sp?).  If you haven't heard of him check him out.
Vongore:  I'm also a fan of Marquez but I haven't read too much of his stuff.  There was this book that was pretty popular by a spanish author called Shadow of the Wind I really loved.  The whole "magical realism" thing is really interesting to me, I'm going to have to read more.
GreatBacon: I loved Lamb and Cryptonomicon.  As for Pattern Recognition - that is an amazing book and many consider to be one of the great books of our time.  The thing is Gibson decided at that book that science fiction was kind of pointless because he feels like we have arrived to a place thats pretty close to the world he was describing.  So he said that all his books from now on will be based on the present because it is interesting enough.  The way he writes are in trilogies but each story is unique, they just take place in the same "world" and have some of the same characters.  Spook Country was pretty neat as well but not as good as Pattern Recognition.  The next book should be great though as many have speculated Spook Country was mainly designed to set up the third.  Anyways for his great cyber-punk stories read the the sprawl trilogy and the bridge trilogy.
Luca Shoal: I've read almost every Terry Pratchett book he has ever written except maybe one or two witches books (the witches books are my least favorite but I <3 Tiffany Aching stories)
The Watchmen is great but we have a seperate comics thread and even though I screwed up in my first post we should probably keep them seperate

For your more furry desires there is Inverloch, which I read through.  My biggest criticism was the ending (it sucks IMO).  The art also is not as good as Phoenix Requiem (seeing as Inverloch was the author's first one she did), but it's still a very good graphic novel with a great story/flow/characters:

I've read almost every Marquez book (i can't read them all, that sun of a beach writes like 3 books per year)

The ones i liked the most were "Amor en los tiempos del Colera" and "El coronel no tiene a quien le escriba" (Sorry, i don't know their english names).

2 years ago Marquez released his shortes book, but i think is awesome. "Mis putas tristes" (something like "My sad whores" =P)

Try searching one of those, also, "Amor en los tiempos del colera" have a movie that was released this year, it's not as good as the book (it was like talk talk talk pr0nz pr0nz talk talk talk, well, like most Marquez books)

Those are both awesome and I've been following them for quite some time; good taste.

I read a lot of historical fiction, such as the book that sprang that (terrible) movie "The Other Boelyn Girl". There is a whole bunch of books by that writer (Philippa Gregory) that I find spectacular, all in similar themes, all about various important historical figures and more importantly about the times they lived in. Otherwise I read most of what is suggested here and am left with little to suggest on my own; if you like fantasy I would suggest the trilogy by Maria V. Snyder, starting with "Poison Study".

It's an addiction, my wife is worse.  She reads 3-5 at the same time.  Also I'm constantly in fear of a book avalanche from her nightstand.
