Seriously? - exanimo2 - 02-19-2015 Banning me from IRC? I didn't do anything. I'm trying to figure out a new IRC client and I automatically connect to BRBU and can't get rid of it. I didn't say anything in in the channel, and just left as soon as I joined. You guys need to grow up and learn to let things go. Re: Seriously? - Eschatos - 02-19-2015 Prove you're not an NSA spy after our vital fluids. Re: Seriously? - Eightball - 02-19-2015 So, perhaps this is a good opportunity to open a dialogue. I don't really use IRC, and I'm not really aware of the drama occurring years ago regarding some BRBU members like Jorge (to which I assume this is related). This seems to be cause for a rift in the community, so would someone explain in objective terms what exactly happened, as well as whether the consequences of it are still relevant and why? For years now it seems to have been something that people don't care to remedy or even discuss, and it's a little weird. In before I completely misinterpreted the situation Re: Seriously? - Surf314 - 02-19-2015 Exanimo wasn't just banned on IRC - he was already banned on IRC. The ban was just enforced. Its an old ban, but no one has ever removed it so its still in effect. The situation, if I recall, involved cutting ties with certain members because it was a source of toxic drama. And the entire point of BRBU is to have a drama-less community for people to feel comfortable spending some of their free time playing games together. As far as removing old bans goes, I've always been an advocate for it but pretty much every time I get my way it bites me in the ass. So I'm going to stay firmly out of this one. Re: Seriously? - rumbot - 02-19-2015 Wow. I had no idea till now that Jorge and Exanimo were ever banned from anything. I just assumed that Jorge drifted off and possible gave up games as he grew up, like sadly happens to some. "All Jorge" remains one of the best postgame taunts. And, I always had a fetish for Exanimo in a British-voice-tibetian-excursion-bald-head kind of way. But, I'm totally cishet. I assumed Exanimo achieved his zen and now was a frontend webdesigner for some douchey silicon valley social startup. I have to trust there was sufficient cause for action at the time. But, yeah, I'd have to think it's been long enough to revisit the decision unless something unforgivable happened. That's pretty much how channel bans work, they're auto enforced I'm not going to dig through the archives on this one but Quote:As far as removing old bans goes, I've always been an advocate for it but pretty much every time I get my way it bites me in the ass. So I'm going to stay firmly out of this one. Re: Seriously? - Eightball - 02-19-2015 Okay, but it got a little ambiguous there. When you say the ban was enforced, perhaps we should specify that a user enforced the ban; IE it wasn't an automatic action taken by the server. I would argue that reinforcing the ban reaffirms its original intent--that the community is better off with the person being banned. Do you think this is still the case? The ban has been in effect for something on the order of 5 years (it has been around as long as I have posted here), perhaps it is worth re-evaluating rather than taking the view of "it is what it is". Having done a little more investigating, I'm skeptical that the ban was ever justified. Though, that's not what we're here to comment on, so let's refocus on whether or not it should be maintained. The only reason you would have to maintain the ban is if you still suspect that jorge/exanimo/whatever are toxic. I think that after 5 years with such limited contact, that is not an assessment that cannot be made with much certainty. I will give my opinion that having gamed with them fairly recently, that there's no such concern anymore. True, this is just an IRC ban of questionable significance, but it does send a message of exclusivity. And he wasn't trying to evade a ban, he moved. Code: 07:43:38 -!- exanimo [~exanimo@119.109.66.199] entered the room. Re: Seriously? - at0m - 02-20-2015 Horse's mouth, reporting in. The previous permanent ban registered with and enforced by ChanServ was set up to be linked to exanimo's authentication account on GameSurge, and would follow that account no matter where the connection was coming from. He was able to enter the channel without authenticating, which evaded that ban, so I added another hostmask to enforce that ban. If ainmosni (who initially did the ban) or one of the other admins wants to pull it, then I'd be happy to pull it, but that's not my call to make, as I'm not privy to internal admin discussion nor am I entirely educated on the initial circumstances of the ban. I don't care one way or another, I'm just the odd-shift IRC watchdog. I'd recently reviewed the channel banlist to research another issue (checking into the randos joining/parting and any similarities to people already on the banlist), which as I mentioned in chat is the main reason I caught this in the first place. Re: Seriously? - Elder - 02-20-2015 IRC has its uses but for the most part you really are not missing all that much by not being there. Heres a suggestion for next time. Hey guys I tried to get onto IRC and i got banned. Can someone remove it please? If not can someone explain why i was banned. Re: Seriously? - Versus - 02-23-2015 for the same reason we still have spamserv, which has done nothing in the past 6 years but randomly ban people who accidentally set it off, of course Re: Seriously? - Versus - 02-23-2015 it's incredibly ancient history. ainmosni, who performed the original ban, for taking his irc nick (clearly a grievous offense) in like 2008, hasn't checked the forums since early august, so i doubt exanimo's going to get an answer anytime soon Re: Seriously? - Nitrous Oxide - 02-25-2015 gg wp wtf nerds (02-19-2015, 06:00 PM)rumbot link Wrote: "All Jorge" remains one of the best postgame taunts. qft Re: Seriously? - rumbot - 02-25-2015 What happened to NO2? He's been a regular, and chill, ps2 peep. Re: - at0m - 02-25-2015 Channel glitch on that one. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk Re: Seriously? - exanimo2 - 03-10-2015 At this point, I'm not even going to follow up and try to get unbanned from IRC as I was just trying out a new application for my phone and joining random channels I remember from the past. My initial knee jerk reaction was to come here with a big 'what the hell'. It wasn't necessarily needed. I don't really care that I'm banned (even though I hadn't done anything), especially since you wouldn't want to deal with a 'gene pool polluting retard' such as myself. I wasn't even going to respond to this thread any further because I didn't think it was worth it as so much time had passed and I had forgotten what happened in the first place. I would have also liked to think that we had all grown up and moved on from the petty squabbling that had occurred, but I really think we all need some healthy retrospection to keep moving on. I don't want us to forget why we left the Destructoid community and why I had forgotten about BRBU, this was all part of the reason the now forgettable rift had occurred; we had all started to become the dicks that we tried running from in the first place. As I now remember what I said in the past when I had first decided to leave BRB,U: I'm happy I've met the jerks from this community I was compatible with and I will choose to forget the jerks I was not compatible with. Be nice, y'all. This retard is out! Re: Seriously? - rumbot - 03-13-2015 Well, now I know for sure that you never loved me.
