And like we were saying before... IT'S A GOOD PLACE TO START. Re: The Movie Thread - Surf314 - 09-27-2010 Young Guns is still one of my fav westerns. The engrish in that movie makes me happy. Re: The Movie Thread - [SiN] Merc - 09-27-2010 While we're on the subject of westerns, The Cowboys was pretty damn nice too. Re: The Movie Thread - Ianki - 09-28-2010 the subtitles even make it better. Re: The Movie Thread - Squishy3 - 09-28-2010 machete owned Re: The Movie Thread - [SiN] Merc - 09-28-2010 Book of Eli wasn't too shabby. Liked the part where he came across the old man and woman in that house. Gave me a laugh. Re: The Movie Thread - Surf314 - 09-28-2010 Quote: Merc link=topic=947.msg175765#msg175765 date=1285714152] It was a superb samurai movie/western IMO. Made me wish our two cultures were still playing off each other in cinema like they used to. Re: The Movie Thread - HeK - 09-28-2010 Tonight I saw "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" in glorious 3D. Well, it is the best 3D movie I have seen so far. However I hold a great amount of excitement of what Jackass 3D holds for me. Seriously, the 3D is very well done and is in no way distracting. It's everything Avatar tried to do with the gimmick and failed. That aside, the movie is basically "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe" meets "Star Wars: A new hope" with "300"-style cinematics. During the movie I turned to my friend and asked if Zack Snyder had directed this. I was joking but it turns out that he actually did. Turns out Zack Snyder movies are more obvious to recognize then films by Rob Cohen. The special effects are awesome. Nearly flawless CGI. It's very hard at times to tell that the film is animated. The voice acting is top notch. The fights are as graphic as one would dare for a "children's" film. The story, of course, is where the film falls short. It's not a bad movie per se, but uninspired, predictable and far too short. It starts with a LOtR feeling of length, with a 'oops! we overshot the budget' ending. Too many of the scenes felt lifted directly from other movies. Overall, 3.5/5. Not bad, but better then I expected. I saw it with my wife who likes the books. She said they had to leave out a lot of darker stuff because it couldn't make it to film without bumping up the rating. It's also the first three books so the story is pretty rushed with a lot cut out. Also as far as the predictability, I can't really fault it too much. I heard a director talking once about "movie shorthand." Basically when you are trying to tell a lot of story in a short amount of time you use things that are very similar to other movies when they are supposed to be cluing you in on background story that is very similar to other movies. So like the one owl is very obviously going to do that thing he does because he is presented in such a way that in the first 30 seconds of hearing him you know what kind of character he is. Even though he has very little screen time he can still be a big part of the story because we "read in" all the other stuff about him when he acted so similarly to all the other characters that do the same shit as him. tl;dr Movie tries to cover too much at once Re: The Movie Thread - KorJax - 09-29-2010 Saw Let the Right One In last night, which is basically a weird sweedish hybrid story between a vampire tale, "mystery", and a romance story. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/ I came in with low expectations, and came out surprisingly satisfied. Very good movie. It is a very interesting and surreal blend between "classic" vampirsm folklore in a modern day setting. One where the main characters are both innocent and confused 12 year olds.
