Re: Mirror's Edge - Wedge - 01-20-2009 They don't do copy protection to stop pirates, they do it in hopes of delaying it for any amount of time (was actually effective with Bioshock, which saw proper price drops later as well) and for the more devious reason of preventing used resale, which you can't do with Steam anyways. I just wish they'd find a simpler way of doing it, like making you register and authenticate the game once (The Witcher did this for upgrading to the EE content and it was fine), instead of the layers of retarded buggy copy protection you see instead. I realise I'm maybe towards one extreme of the piracy arc but, Valve aside, I do not buy games on sight. I waited a month to play Bioshock. Perhaps I'm looking at the issue as too black and white and neglecting some middle ground but no DRM implementation has any effect on my buying habits other than an added excuse to continue in my ways.
It has varying levels of success I'd imagine, I'm not someone who buys most games on release either, but the majority of a game sales are initially after it's release. That's probably true a lot more so for consoles than PC games though, which may be yet another problem with how PC's are being treated like consoles, when they may work a lot differently. I'd imagine longtail sales are a lot more probable on PC, where the potential userbase can fluctuate a lot, and there is a much larger variety of outlets to sell your product than just the standard retail chains that console games are largely relegated to. Honestly I don't think a lot of people know exactly what they're doing with selling PC games now, and that's just one of the ideas they've tried. I think it has some basic merits to the concept, but depending how it's done it could (and probably has) caused just as many problems as helped any sales.
Did you really need to take that many words to say that? Are you that Dissonant dude? Also I'm with Budr on this one, copy protection or lack thereof has never affected my choice on game purchase. I buy games I think are worth my money (lots of replay value, or just a nice, long game) and nothing more. That's why I generally end up buying more console games/RPGs than PC games. Re: Mirror's Edge - KarthXLR - 04-18-2009 [necro] Pirated this recently. Starts off really satisfying, but then plummets down into the dribble of awful story, terrible combat, retarded quick time sequences, and some of the worst characters and plot twists I have seen in a long time. I hate this game, brb uninstalling. [/necro] Re: Mirror's Edge - Squishy3 - 04-18-2009 uh, there is no quick time sequences in mirror's edge. no idea what you're talking about. Actually the game is mostly made up of behind the scenes quick time events. Like every disarm, every.....well just everytime you fight anyone.
