Re: k0ala's BLU Engineer cosplay - k0ala - 03-29-2013 Today I'll attempt to take my overalls from "Faded Jeans" to the proper "Operator's Overalls". Materials: One giant pot, one giant spoon, one garment. Salt, as a pre-dyeing mordant, to make the cotton fibers fuzzier and able to soak up more dye molecules. Vinegar, as a post-dyeing fixative, to keep the dye from bleeding out. Rit brand liquid dye: one bottle Navy Blue and one bottle Black. Rubber gloves and plastic bags, because I'm not intending to dye the walls blue, nor my hands either. Re: k0ala's BLU Engineer cosplay - k0ala - 03-29-2013 1/2 bottle of each, water to boiling, then the dye, then the overalls. I sweated over that simmering mess, stirring for 35 minutes. It was almost ink-black when I tipped it into the sink and set to rinsing. After the water ran almost clear, then the overalls went into the washing machine with the dropcloths and a half-gallon of vinegar. One more cycle with clear water, then into the dryer for a long tumble. They turned out darker than I wanted, which was awesome and unexpected. I'll do some more to age these and give them the proper color. Re: k0ala's BLU Engineer cosplay - k0ala - 05-04-2013 Re: k0ala's BLU Engineer cosplay - CaffeinePowered - 05-04-2013 Nice job! Re: k0ala's BLU Engineer cosplay - k0ala - 05-12-2013 adventures in dyeing: chapter 2 the tool belt again, too dark, weathering required, will be fine. and the mysterious brown patch on back of the overalls, is on, and I call this costume done, 2 years after first conceiving of it. |
