Why not decriminalization?
It's a civil offence up here in Maine, with no possibility of incarceration up until you get beaned with >=2.5oz if it's together, or ~<=.5oz and it's already bagged individually for obvious resale. Just a $400 fine for possession, no aggravating factors like drug paraphernalia to bump it up either.
That leads to less overcrowding in lockups of all sizes, 'specially up here where something like 70% of the state is policed by county/state police, having no local PD (Love my town, no cops anywhere) and there are very few towns with local detention ability, and rely solely on the few county and state lockups.
Having weed decriminalized in this manner also generates the state considerable revenue, as we're not only not paying to lock up every Tom, Dick and Harry that got popped with a rolled joint or a bowl, but also smacking them with a hefty fine on the backside.
Personally I've paid that fine myself 7 times, $2800+ (Court fees, lawl.) in fines*, yet I've never been incarcerated, and because I haven't and will not be jailed, I'll continue to do so.
*If weed were legal, I would have probably already paid out more in taxes on it than that, so I don't care. I grow my own so I'm not paying retail for it, and I can simply sell some to my co-workers and cover the cost of the fine.

That's legalization.
De-Criminalization just means that its not longer an offense to sell it/possess it.
Legalization is when the government regulates, taxes and sells it.
Decrim means dealers still sell it which is sketchy cause they can do whatever they want with the stuff before they sell it.

Decriminilzation means that dealers will still go to jail (possesition of large quantities will still be a felony under most proposals) but we will no longer be filling up our prisons disproportionally with poor black youth for a non-violent crime (about 12 percent of ALL black males between 25-29 is in jail right now), and something like 15 percent of all prisoners are incarcerated for pot possession (again, this is disproportionately black), costing states and the federal government something like a billion dollars a year. Combine this with depressing statistics of poor reintegration after incarceration due to exposure to heavier drugs in prison and difficulty finding jobs as a felon, it's clear that the criminalization of pot has done nothing but harm on the whole. Many people who wouldn't necessarily want to legalize pot are still for decriminalization.

MA passed its law last year making it less costly than a speeding ticket - i think its 50 or 100 bucks - no multiple offenses - only thing you're really in trouble for is dealing like kirby was saying
I think its one of the things we'll see in out lifetime... legalizing weed and hopefully prostitution... both have been around since the begining of civilization (obviously weed even before that). Why not collect taxes and regulate them when theres really no disadvantage and so many advantages? Its not like they are going away, and its naive to think they will if kept illegal.
The morals of those running the government (<3 them WASPs) are clouding judgement. I think by the time we're old and grey, the slow fade of religion -thats already quite apparent - will cause a lot of reform.

For him the obviously smarter choice would have been at that point, although this holds true for most any substance, legal or otherwise. If he can 'burn out' so quickly with no self-regard, he's most likely the type of person who shouldn't be imbibing in anything.

If making weed legal would help curb crime and abuse. It can be said that having it illegal substantiates crime and abuse.
You mentioned it would have been a better decision "for him" to just avoid it.
But by judging how nearly no-one has absolute resolve in the refusal of such substances while they are illegal, wouldn't he be doomed no matter what then? Had he obeyed the law, he would have been fine. But no one seems to obey the law.
So couldn't I argue that people should just obey the law and avoid it in the first place instead of trying it?

So I had a tremendous fucking panic attack last night. Basically I have this strain of weed that gives you a huge head rush, and so I'm pretty sure that makes less blood in your feet. Anyways, I guess you notice things different when your high, so the "pain"/feeling was a bit more intense, and I started convincing myself I was going to die because I read some dumb "facts" about weed overdoses (lol) and how it can cause respiratory system failure.
It sucked and was probably the worst thing I've ever experienced.
But then I realize how fucking stupid that was (the next morning), and smoked more. The end.
tl;dr bad highs are fucking terrible
Thank god they rarely ever happen, but now I understand people who get bad highs the first time and never ever want to smoke again. lol
