I'm starting to think they're trying to mess up the PC version just so it'll be pirated the hell out of so they can complain of piracy.

Happy to oblige...

Re: New Modern Warfare 2 Trailer - CaffeinePowered - 11-05-2009

Quote:Essentially, they're ignoring the needs and wants of a huge customer base and telling that customer base that they have to do things like their console brethren.

Essentially, they can take the easy way out on this decision. If the game sells poorly, they can blame the easy scapegoat of piracy instead of forcing features PC gamers don't want or blaming a stagnant economy.

Just recently another industry had that line of thinking. Let's force features and options down our customers throats. They don't need them or want them; so it will be the industry's job to tell the consumer what they want and need. And our sales will still be fine because all our products will have all that extra stuff and customers will have no choice.

Sound familiar? Taken in a simple context, it sounds like the US Auto Industry. THey forces giant sized, super gas guzzling, speed demon vehicles with all sorts of extraenous options we did not need or want. All these vehicles monetarily crushed people with gas prices and ridiculous maintenance costs. The US Auto Industry soon collapsed under its own weight as buyers went for smaller more gas and energy effiecient vehicles.

The similarities are there. A corporation telling the consumers what is best for them in terms of products and features instead of listening to the consumers and catering to the consumers needs and wants. And when things go kaput; they become lazy and blame the simplest thing they can. With the automakers, it was unfair foreign competition. With PC game developers; its piracy.

I just hope PC game developers don't go crying for a bailout because they blame piracy instead of catering to the need and wants of the consumers.

You say that like they're a PC developer.  This isn't going to hurt them at all when they're going to sell millions on top of millions on consoles.  They haven't really changed anything as far as those platforms are concerned.

Steam Sales are free money, while I by no means know the numbers I DO know that a steam sale is worth at least 2 times the profit from one retail sale, if not more. So even if you only sell say 250,000 - 300,000 copies, it might be the bottom line equivalent to selling 1,000,000 of the same game on a console.

PC Steam - Three parties get a cut, Valve, The Publisher (assuming one is used), and the studio
Console/Retail - Many Parties - Console Company, The Publisher, The Retailer, Packaging/Printing Company, Shipping Company, and finally the studio

Even if it sells like shit now on the PC, they will still undoubtedly blame piracy, kind of like the Spore DRM backlash. You include the DRM to "stop" pirates, then when the backlash happens....blame piracy. Its a sell fulfilling prophecy.

Hopefully it won't be too long till someone mods a pirated version to be decently playable.

By "no dedicated servers" I only assumed they meant no "custom" dedicated server and that' they'll be other servers hosted by IW themselves...

If they expect US to host these bloody things on OUR COMPUTERS then they are more out of touch than I thought. I'm already sick of l4d's "No Server < 100ms Ping" policy, but imagine what it'd be like if there were no dedicated servers at all! I have a hard enough time in Borderlands hosting for 3 others. How the the hell can anyone host a 9v9 match "without any lag"??

Not to be redundant, but I lost faith in Infinity Ward completely. To wrap it up... EA > IW  >Sad

A message to Infinity Ward:

Quote:“Thanks to everybody who voted Call of Duty: World at War for the 27th Annual Golden Joystick Awards. We are thrilled that CoD:WaW was awarded both Multiplayer Game of the Year and Nintendo Game of the Year!

This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our dedicated fans.”

Or dedicated servers!

A PC isn’t just a mouse and keyboard connected to an XBox 360.

To be fair in L4D 100 ping isn't all THAT bad, considering it's 4 players against (mostly) AI zombies, and it tends to do a good job of remember where you hit.

But L4D supports Dedi, and also MW2 is 9v9 lol

TBH, 100 ping on a strong server isn't bad.
However, the issue is that 100 ping on a weak or moderate server can really mess you up, which is a reason Valve needs to get some strong servers set up instead of these 100's of completely crap servers they have. It's been a problem on L4D, and it's still a problem with L4D2.

oh I'm sorry I thought this was the rage thread of L4D2

That's pretty much the point though. L4D has some pretty strong dedicated server that work pretty well even with a 100ms ping. Imagine instead of those though, they're basic home computers. Add on top of that that your enemy is another player and not just hoards of AI and you have a disaster. On top of that STILL is that you'd have the concept console owners are familiar with... the host computer without ANY lag.

Seriously, how the hell does this benefit IW? I mean, it's not like they have to pay for the servers. Odds are someone will figure out a way to mod servers if they happen to be hosted on their computers anyways.

Any time I've ever joined a server with 100 ping or more, I've always had lag issues. What more, I've even had lag issues with ping as low as 70 sometimes.

Dude... maybe it isn't the server, maybe it's you.
