Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - [fr31ns]Karrde - 10-27-2008 MGS2 theme would work VERY well performed by a wind ensemble.  Mmmmmm, MGS2 theme on French Horn or Coronet... Also, the music from Myst was fucking awesome, that should be on a list somewhere... Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - KorJax - 10-28-2008 Yeah, good list but honestly I think the main Halo theme deserves atleast top 20 (maybe even top 10). No matter what you think about Halo you have to agree that it had hands-down on of the best theme songs of any game in this generation/last generation of games. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0mQk7JEVq4 Whenever someone would have Halo running on an Xbox just on the main menu I would also like to stick around just to listen to the main theme song play. It's seriously good, even if Halo isn't "the best game ever" in of itself. EDIT: OH and yes MGS2's theme is also very good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU6pZdl9AQc Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - CaffeinePowered - 10-28-2008 (10-28-2008, 03:08 PM)KorJax link Wrote: Yeah, good list but honestly I think the main Halo theme deserves atleast top 20 (maybe even top 10). No matter what you think about Halo you have to agree that it had hands-down on of the best theme songs of any game in this generation/last generation of games. Bleh Halo, there's a lot better music in FPS games than Halo, HL2 has a very nice soundtrack and the classic EM_DM1 is always good Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - KorJax - 10-28-2008 (10-28-2008, 03:28 PM)CaffeinePowered link Wrote:
Bleh Halo, there's a lot better music in FPS games than Halo, HL2 has a very nice soundtrack and the classic EM_DM1 is always good
Disagree. While HL2 is an overall better game you can't deny that Halo's score is good, even when taken out of the context of the game. HL2 I don't feel "yeah fuck holy shit" when I hear the music outside the context of the game, the only track I can remotely feel that way was the music that plays when you are in the hospital with Alyx in Ep 1 Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - Wedge - 10-28-2008 (10-28-2008, 04:25 PM)KorJax link Wrote:
Bleh Halo, there's a lot better music in FPS games than Halo, HL2 has a very nice soundtrack and the classic EM_DM1 is always good
Disagree. While HL2 is an overall better game you can't deny that Halo's score is good, even when taken out of the context of the game. And speaking of "FPS" games with great music, Deux Ex ftmfw. Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - KorJax - 10-28-2008 I still have the Deus Ex main theme and the UNATCO theme on my mp3 player, though I never listen to it anymore Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - Scary Womanizing Pig Mask - 10-28-2008 (10-23-2008, 02:43 PM)CaffeinePowered link Wrote:
Well, two of them are more timeless than classic, since they're still being used (the FF and Zelda themes). Honestly though, I don't blame them for going retro. How much music from current games to you still remember? There is some real great stuff that gets put out, but just not as much. and most of it really just isn't that memorable. I will agree that nostalgia likely plays a big part in this, but there is still a reason that probably every single one of those songs gets constantly remixed in mp3s and youtube videos. I actually like the "you might not agree with our list, and that's okay" that they've done for their top 10s for awhile now. Seems like it's a bit of a cop out, but it is true... It's their personal picks, not ours.
Honestly, I just think that music doesn't really compare as much now a-days. The only thing that really stands out to me from the last several years is 'Still Alive' (which I think should be on the list) and some of the music from Mother 3. I think part of this is due to the fact that less games use original music, a lot of it is music from regular artists and not made specifically for that particular game. The other part is that in the past I think more emphasis was placed on music due to the limited ability of graphics to set the mood. If you can't set the mode and atmosphere with great graphics, use music and sound effects to do it.
What about the Ace Attorney games? On the whole I mostly agree with this list, except for the Super Metroid theme. There's amazing songs in the Metroid series, but they picked the most bleh one Re: Screw Attack's best VGM List - cbre88x - 10-28-2008 The Halo main Theme is pretty memorable..however: the whole soundtrack is not. I've played HL2 repeatedly and only gave Halo one rush-job playthrough, and yet that's the one song I remember. Game aside, it's one good piece of music. Not sure what you mean by EM_DM1... You mean E1M1 of DOOM? Because that is pretty damn classic I agree. It's old news for sure, but I hadn't heard about it until a few weeks ago. And under the EA Partners scheme, which Lombardi kept getting a boner over in interviews?
