Depending on how much bandwidth/CPU you were using you might be able to run both

Re: L4D brbu Server? - WTF Joel - 11-07-2008

All money Im getting is going down on my new rig, but you know I'm always around to admin servers. I think Cc2iscooL currently has 4 l4d servers running.

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Surf314 - 11-07-2008

Does L4D have a linux server?  Because if possible I can set my old desktop up for maybe a small (like 4 or 8 ) server for us to use whenever.  I'm assuming that with a 4 person server the bandwidth and processing needs would be met by a 8 mbps cable connection and a P4 computer?

All source games and in fact I think most ALL games will have dedicated server builds for linux and windows. A 4 or 8 man server won't suck a ton of bandwidth, but I suspect it might take up more CPU than a TF2 server running all that AI.

Dedicated servers require much much less CPU power than running the actual game does, Im sure a P4 could probably handle it. As for bandwidth, just set it up, snag 4 people and try it out.

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Surf314 - 11-07-2008

I'll set it up when I get home.  Don't have the game though.

It does because would you see me running a windows server?

I wouldn't. I've been trying to find out if I could run a server through my PS3, but it's starting to look slim.

You should be able to if you boot to linux on the PS3, but I have my doubts as to its stability, since even the regular linux and windows servers have been crashing left and right

Re: L4D brbu Server? - cbre88x - 11-07-2008

Yea, I already have Linux ready to boot on the PS3..I just need to software to run the server.

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Trace - 11-07-2008

I'd be willing to chip in for a server if needed. But at this point I'm not sure that it is. Joel has been able to host on his box and it worked remarkably well. How a full 4v4 will run on home boxes has yet to be seen so I guess we will have to wait.

Sweet.  I will try to be hosting one on my box as well.  Although I has no game yet so Kor and Vandam need to hurry up and draw my name =(

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Vandamguy - 11-07-2008

still waiting on that , and now salamander may snake your game Tongue

anyone that would chip in for a server would get admin, with 11 votes to that effect we'll have more than enough people.

running game client and server at the same time ? how he do dis ?

if servers are easy enough to run from a spare comp then we may not need to pwny up any money.

Indeed, although the person with the server may get a surprise when their internet bill comes. Most ISPs severely throttle and cap upload bandwidth, and give some heavy fines if you go over. I don't want anybody getting that surprise, so it'd be a good idea to research that a bit more before you offer up a box at your home.

Also, I'm definitely willing to pay an amount needed for a server. Smile

While some of you MAY have a spare box and connection to run this on, the majority of (all?) ISP's are garbage, and most of you aren't in a location that will provide a decent ping for a lot of people (on a coast or in Canadaia).  Plus youl'd be subjecting your personal line to mutual degredation if you use it a lot for other things.  Being in Europe with massive cheap bandwidth is nice, but unless you're paying for $100/mo for a connection here, I doubt anyone could easily run a proper 12 person server.  I'd go for a Texas or Illinois server, as those should offer the most well rounded coverage for everyone on this continent at least.

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Surf314 - 11-07-2008

Cox is pretty good and Im only offering 4 mans during scheduled intervals so I think it should be fine.  We could use some quantity here since gameplay is supposed to be built around 4 co-op with some versus fun thrown in.

What is your upload speed? I know Rogers in Canada has the same upload speed regardless of what bandwidth package you buy. Around 500-700kb/s at best, which iirc might be barely enough for a 4-person server.

Now saying you shouldn't, just saying you should make sure you can. Smile

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Vandamguy - 11-08-2008

using Bell Sympatico

max upload is about 110 KBPS (real world numbers)
max down is around 750

didnt have  too much problems with lag when hosting mod nights 12 - 15 peeps

cept for wedge , west coast fruit loop.

Re: L4D brbu Server? - Wedge - 11-18-2008

Soooo far I'm definitely still wanting this.  I've yet to get in a game with above "two bars" and it's ranged from annoying to game breaking with the lag so far.Â
