We should probably discuss accommodations and a total attendance list. Any word from Karrde?

So far I believe attending....

Eightball
Caffeine
Karrde
Kase
Kirby (Sat/Sun Only)

I have a room booked, not sure if Kase is staying with friends or would want to split with us.

Sound off if you need one!

I'll be staying at home since it's so close, so I wouldn't be needing a room.

Got my girlfriend to pre-reg. If we don't get many more people I'm probably either going to change my room to a king-bed and branch off--that or cancel my room, although 5 people in one room might suck Tongue. Not like the Marriott's that pricey anyways.

CONFIRMED FOR CON!  Talked to my scheduler yesterday, I'm golden.

I'm sad to admit it but I can probably pull off a sick Harry Potter. I got ridiculed a bit in high school for my resemblance to him.

I do have 3 wands.  Looks like Holly might be grabbing a room too so I might crash nwith her to cut the financial burden.  2 of my other friends may be coimnig as well.

Oh and I hear there's a plan to try to organize some official unofficial party rooms this year.  Oh and if you're interested, Kase, I can teach you how to make wands easily.  Like start to finish in a few hours.

Karrde, you should let me borrow a wang wand (Or teach me...is it the paper method? I'm interested in learning either way). Just in case I don't have mine finished in time (I'll probably end up buying one but it won't get here by geek kon). Pretty please with chocolate frogs on top?

I doubt I could pull off Ron lol. I'm going as youngin' Snape. And I'm getting a fake nose to go with it.
And Eightball, I can see it.

That too.

@Kase it's super simple actually.  All of mine are made out of hardwood (Maple, I think) and found wood at that.  All you need is a Dremel (or someone who has one), some sand paper, a color stain, and a clear top coat (shellac or polyurethane).  Aside from the dremel, everything can be had for a few dollars at a hardware store.

1. Find wood.  I like using downed and dry branches.  Works well since it sands nicely.  If you know what various woods look like it should make choosing easier.  Again hardwoods are best.  I'd still avoid oak.  It's the evil wood.  It's more rock than wood.  Twisted and evil.

2. Use the rough sanding attachment for the dremel to strip the bark in the places you want it gone.  Use the same attachment to put and overall shape on it.

3. Use fine grit sandpaper (120 and finer) to clean up the stripped and shaped areas.  This helps with the overall look of the thing.  Cleaner lines and whatnot.

4. Apply brush on stain.  The more you do, the darker the color will be.  But there is a limit as to how dark something will become.  Also, most woods have resins, which will dye unevenly or almost not at all.  I personally like the uneven tone, which lends itself to giving the wand a more natural appearance.  Allow to dry overnight or dry with a hair drier on a low setting.

5.  Apply brush on clear coat (1-3 coats depending on how shiny you want it) and allow the final coat to dry overnight.

Thats really it.  I could make it for you but I always encourage ppl to try something new Big Grin

Snape's wand is 15 inches, and ebony in color.

Wand Tutorial.

Perfect, I have a Dremel so all I would need is to buy some wood stain and top coat. And there's an apple tree just outside!

I'll let you know how this all turns out...props are not my forte.

Your mask was looking pretty badass.  In the end, you begin to realize they're all pretty much the same set of skills Tongue  It's not the what so much as how you think about it and problem solve.

Re: GEEK.KON 2011 Madison, WI - Kirby - 07-22-2011

Oh yeah, just to clarify my tentative schedule, I should be arriving some time early-mid morning on Saturday and I'll be leaving late Sunday, so I'm only going to be there for about a day total. I've already talked to Caff and I'll be crashing on the floor of his room since I won't be there but a night.

Re: GEEK.KON 2011 Madison, WI - kaese - 07-24-2011

I've got the robe finished, no pictures though. I have yet to break off a tree limb so no wand progress. (It's also been quite stormy lately so I've been waiting for the branches to dry out a bit.)
