Re: 5770 vs 4870 - Cloud_9ine - 04-06-2010

I was at this point last winter too with those choices. In the end I just got a 1GB 4870 due to the nice price and performance to go with what I need. I don't do massive resolutions though. At my smaller screens I can easily run games like crysis on very high. I do agree to just go for the 4870 if you don't have a massive monitor setup, then get the 4870 and wait for some real DX11 games.

Re: 5770 vs 4870 - KorJax - 04-06-2010

Yeah but the link surf posts shows the 5770 being avalable for around $130 with free shipping, that's a damn good price and ends up being (slightly) cheaper than the 4870 which goes for $155.

ATI's drivers are still balls.  Especially for opengl and anything older than like 5 years.
not really

and like i said korjax, the 4890 i have runs every single game i have on max settings at 1920x1200 easy
If the 4870 is only 10 bucks more than the 4850, i say go for it

This.

Fan is loud though.

I've been playing Half-Life again lately.

Looks better in OpenGL than DirectX.

It's funny playing Half-Life in software mode too, now that we have processors capable of hitting the framelimit. Looks like a souped up Wolfenstein then.

That's just HL though.  ATIs seem to have issues with games running modern games/mods that are OpenGL only.  Also, BRB, software mode.

Re: 5770 vs 4870 - Spore - 04-07-2010

I'm just curious. Can I see some sources or evidence of ATI cards struggling with modern OpenGL games? Since I'm running ATI right now I might as well know about these things.

nVidia fanbois clinging to ATi's former reputation of like almost a decade ago.
