The Sports Thread - Tricks - 06-28-2010 While we do make random postings in other threads, I wanted a thread where I can post random news and facts for those of you who follow sports. Some of it will be Sports Center re-hashing, but Iâll try to add some real commentary. Tennis: Wimbledon http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/wimbledon10/news/story?id=5335539 Todayâs action does not disappoint. While Federer sailed on with fairly little trouble, the USâs one chance for Wimbledon glory (in my eyes) is in serious danger. At the time of writing this, Roddick is behind two sets to one, and is battling back to stay in it. Roddick is ranked the 5th seed overall in the tourney, and honestly isnât playing that badly from what I am reading. This truly has been the Wimbledon of almost-upsets (remember Federer almost losing in the first round), and I sincerely hope that Roddick can stay in it. EDIT: Roddick goes down. The US is really doing shitty in international sports this week. Baseball: Standings http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/ Even though the Twins are still at the top of the AL Central, lastâs nights beating by the Mets show they are having issues right now. Detroit is in striking distance, and if they can stay together I would love to see them at the top of the AL Central. Far more interesting so far in the season is the National League. We have three leaders who I wouldnât have necessarily marked as easy picks at the beginning of the season. The Braves have looked dominant so far, along with the Reds (yes I just said the Reds), and the great pitching of the Padres in the NL West. Having seen the Cards been so dominate in the NL Central, I love seeing the Reds have their moment. Letâs hope they can continue to the end of the season so we can see some different teams in the playoffs. Yankeeâs pull off the rally: http://www.pinstripealley.com/2010/6/28/1540626/new-york-yankees-8-los-angeles World Cup: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5336233&categoryid=4823314&cc=5901&ver=us Netherlandâs Highlights. While my interest in the World Cup has dropped off hardcore since the USAâs loss, I still love to see the highlights. I find myself saying âsoccerâ again instead of âfootballâ as the World Cup mania bleeds out day by day. A really crushing defeat on Saturday for us, however I still feel other teams may have it much worse (in countries that truly care about soccer). Re: The Sports Thread - Chief - 06-28-2010 i'd rather keep our sports discussions here rather than updating with some sportcentre type news thing so relating to recent sports news FUCKING TRADED HALAK THOSE ASSWIPES Re: The Sports Thread - copulatingduck - 06-28-2010 brb copypasting something from espn so i can pretend i follow sports and therefore have a massive member Re: The Sports Thread - Kirby - 06-28-2010 (06-28-2010, 01:29 PM)Duck link Wrote: brb copypasting something from espn so i can pretend i follow sports and therefore have a massive member Re: The Sports Thread - Ianki - 06-28-2010 You mean like competitive TF2? This is what I read in my spare time, at my lunch break, or watching highlights when I get home from work. I thought I could add something that wasnât already being brought to the community; I certainly wasnât trying to make anybody feel threatened. The US loss was just fucking embarrassing. The US loss was just fucking embarrassing. [/quote] It really was. We were packed into a bar watching the world cup, and it was mostly facepalming and cries of âcome onâ the whole game. The place did erupt when Donovan had his one goal, even though they really didnât have to work for it. I thought about trying to watch a Galaxy game or two during the good times, but now that it is all over Iâm back to watching LeBron fever and Baseball Tonight. Brazil is looking really solid right now in the games I have seenâ¦including the one with Chile right now. It's pretty early, but it might be over for them... Re: The Sports Thread - Chief - 06-28-2010 (06-28-2010, 01:52 PM)Caffeine link Wrote: Back to not caring about football for the next 4 years, thought I will pull for Chile and the Netherlands. Idk if I would be considered minority or majority on these forums, but in real life, most people I know in Texas follow sports. Most people I know in Boston (MIT students) don't follow sports (with the exception of the Boston Red Sox, which several people follow just for the networking opportunities it offers in Boston lol) (06-28-2010, 01:34 PM)Ianki link Wrote: You mean like competitive TF2? touché Re: The Sports Thread - CaffeinePowered - 06-28-2010 (06-28-2010, 02:34 PM)Nitrous Oxide link Wrote: The US is p good... Big difference between beating that team in the qualifying rounds, and playing an amazingly close game in the finals and losing in the first knockout round to a team from a country with a GDP smaller than a fortune 500 company. As far as the Huskers are concerned, I'm kind of indifferent. It'll be interesting to say the least but now the Big 12 is the "Texas Longhorn conference" since their only real challenges are the Sooners and the Aggies. My father in law is semi-upset because he graduated from Iowa State and they wont play each other anymore. I'm just laughing at the fact that the Big 12 now has 10 teams and the Big 10 has 12 teams.
